Cleaning an Oil Spill

Core Samples From Cake

A cake or cupcake is made with filling or different layers. A straw is used to drill down and a 'core sample' collected and analysed.

Fractional Distillation of Crude Oil

Crude oil is distilled in distillation apparatus, and the fractions are collected in different test tubes. Can ignite the fractions carefully afterwards.

Making Charcoal

Wood splints are put in a test tube and heated. The gas given off can be burnt. Charcoal is left once all of the gas is driven off.

Students 'mine' a muffin for choc chips using a variety of techniques, including open cut mining and underground mining.

Oil Spill Simulation

Oil or vegetable oil is added to water in a cup or large bowl to simulate an oil spill. Barriers or absorbents are used to try to clean the spill.
